My son Darrell Andrews Jr. continues to amaze me. He is one of the top up and coming animators in the USA. Unlike sports, there is no way to measure this truth. I am basing it simply by the fact that he won over 700,000 to go to college! On the outside, it may seem that he was lucky because he had a talent that eventually opened these doors. Yes, there is some truth to that. The reality of the matter is internally; we had a plan, a plan that we started when he was 4 years old. Without giving you all of the details of what we did, I want to give you the formula for success by using a simple equation: Recognition of Ability+Willingness To Pursue+Well Oiled Plan+Overcoming Negativity From Other+Laser Beam Focus=Successful Outcomes. In a nutshell, there are several factors involved with achievement of a dream that trip people up. It is my hope that this article will help some people become “Unstuck” in their dream pursuit. I get calls everyday in my coaching work from people who cannot seem to get themselves out of the way of their dream pursuits. We are going to deal with this in the writing. Lets look at these components in detail.
Recognition Of Ability-Abilities within a dream pursuit are vast. What I am sharing it not limited to one area. For my son-it was Art. For another, it could be cooking or the desire to open a restaurant. The first key to success is the recognition of the fact that you got the goods. You have the Moxie. You know you are good at something. Let me interject at this point, most people stumble in this area because they have been brainwashed by a parent, friend or other that they cannot do it. To play it safe and go the safe route. I am here today to tell you that there is bondage in safety. It is a form of slavery. The reason why I say this is people who have the gift, never pursue it because of what somebody said to him or her. “You can’t do that.” “You better go after this profession-to make me happy.” “You are going to starve to death.” And on and on! If my wife and I did this to our son, no way would he be recognized as a top Art prospect. Art is not a safe route but for this son of ours, it is a purposeful one. One that he has loved since he was 4. I can guarantee that companies like Pixar, DreamWorks and Blue Sky think that their are opportunities for great animators. They hire them every year.
Key#1-If you recognize an ability-explore it. See what the possibilities are. If people have brainwashed you with negative words, ask for help. A good friend, a career-coach or in some cases, a psychologist. Do not live in bondage to a lie all of your life.
Willingness To Pursue-Once you have recognized and have pushed through the mental blocks superimposed by others, the next key in the dream quest is to pursue. We placed our son in Art classes when he was 5. We entered him in Art contest and also hired, for 15 bucks on the weekend, an Art Mentor from a local Art School. He helped our son to become college ready for Art by the time he was 9. What is your dream and what is dream and in identification of this, what is your first step. What is your second step? What do you need to do today in order to help yourself get on the path? I find that 80% of the dreamers out there never get on first base. They talk about their dreams for years but that is far as it goes. If not now, when?
Key #2-If you never get on the track, you cannot win the race. Take one step today towards your dream. Come out of your comfort zone. I am not telling you to quit your job but there is something you can do to get to start the dream pursuit,
3-Well Oiled Plan-This does not have to be complex. A simple “SMART Goal” will do. But the old saying “If you fail to plan, plan to fail” is true. If you do not know where you are going, how are you going to get there? Plans also encourage action. If not, life activities will consume you. I tell my coaching clients all the time, most people “Procrastinate” their lives away. You plan gives you a true north. We had a plan for our son and it is paying off! It was a simple pan that we have stuck to for 14 years!
Key #3-Plan! Does not have to be sophisticated. It should be more short term than long. People tend to quit on long-term goal. Anyone can stay focused for at least 30 days. If you keep added days, then months can become years.
Overcoming Negativity Of Others-We live in a pessimistic and often times jealous world. I know this firsthand for I have dealt with it all of my life, with a few exceptions. I have always been a trailblazer and have been talked about and vilified by people who you think should support my efforts. So I know first hand about this one. People can kill your dream if you let them. I am so glad I did not let the negativity of others to stop me from becoming the businessman, father and husband I am today. The most damaging effect of this is often found in the people closest to us. Many of my clients tell me it was the damaging words of a mother, father, and kids in school or friend that stifled their growth. This is a hard one for the wounds go deep. I am not a psychologist so I need to be clear as to what I am communicating here. My mentor said a long time ago, “It is a tragedy to be preoccupied with the past at the expense of the future.” His words ring loud in my ears everyday. I am here to tell you your past does not have to stop you from pursuing your future dreams! It does not have to be an anchor to your future possibilities. It has held you hostage long enough. Time to get set free.
Key#4-You do not have to be preoccupied with the past at the expense of the future. Ask for help if you need it. But do not let the negative words of others to hold you bondage all of your life.
5-Lazer Beam Focus-My wife is one of the major reasons why my son is receiving all of these scholarships. She has made this a personal mission! She puts hours into research, speaking to schools, attending on-line seminars, having my son write essays and pursuit of mentoring in this area. One of our good friends obtained full scholarships for all 4 of her children. We are leaning on her for her expertise. The point I am trying to make here is that if you want to achieve a goal, you need to be focused. I am not talking about part time effort, I am talking about focused. You have to learn to say no to people, adjust your schedule, and put a little GRIND into pursuing your dream, or it will remain a dream forever! I do mean forever. I had to figure this out for myself some years ago as a business owner. I am by nature a caring person so saying no to people was hard. As a result, I put so much time into helping others that I was not achieving my goals. I had to shift gears and push in order to arrive where I am today. I am here to tell you today, the dream will never happen if you give it a spare time effort. This may be OK when you begin, but it will take a deeper level focus to press through to success.
When it is all said and done, it will be worth it. I comfortably say that less that 5% of people ever live their dreams. Please keep in mind that LinkedIn is worldwide so I know in some nations this article is not relevant. You are limited by the rules of your nation and I feel for you as a result, however, if you live in a free nation with no limitations, time to eliminate excuse! Time to go for the dream!
Key #5-GRIND-Start eliminating some of the activities that limiting your ability to pursue your dreams. When you say no to one thing, you are saying yes to your dreams.
Enough said! I would love to get your feedback and or additions to this! I am growing and learning too! Maybe I overlooked something:-)
